The Lord of the Rings

Théoden, son of Thengel, is the King of Rohan in J.R.R. Tolkien's *The Lord of the Rings*. He first appears in *The Two Towers*.

Initially, Théoden is depicted as weakened in mind and body, largely due to the manipulative influence of Gríma Wormtongue, his advisor, who is secretly in the service of Saruman. This period is often described as King Théoden Cursed With Throne; his kingdom suffers under the shadow of Isengard's growing power while he remains passive and unaware.

Upon Gandalf's arrival in Edoras, Théoden is freed from Wormtongue's influence. He undergoes a revitalizing transformation, throwing off his lethargy and reclaiming his authority. He rallies his people, leading them to Helm's Deep to fight against Saruman's forces. He is later shown leading the Rohirrim to battle at the Pelennor Fields to defend Gondor from the forces of Mordor, where he is mortally wounded.
